Bound Book Scanning

"The number of books will grow continually, and one can predict that a time will come when it will be almost as difficult to learn anything from books as from the direct study of the whole universe. It will be almost as convenient to search for some bit of truth concealed in nature as it will be to find it hidden away in an immense multitude of bound volumes."

Denis Diderot
French author, encyclopedist, & philosopher (1713 - 1784)

Automatic Bound Book Scanning

The newest and most radical, innovative scanning technology is now available at Merritt Scanning

THE KNOWLEDGE TRAP

For 1,000 plus years, books and manuscripts have been used by researchers, scientists, historians, philosophers, and authors to record their works for reading and reference. Ready access to this enormous amount of knowledge is largely constrained, up to now! Acceleration of Knowledge Economy foregone conclusion if information readily available.

KNOWLEDGE AT RISK OF LOSS

  • Natural aging from acid in paper
  • Public Use, Abuse and Theft
  • Natural Disasters
  • Political Unrest & Terrorist Acts

While the physical loss cannot always be prevented, protecting and preserving the knowledge in the books can be achieved.

How Does It Work?

Image Quality

  • Image capture is ‘still photography’ at less then 1/80th of a second.
  • Page is still and flat when camera captures the page.  Image blurriness and Curvature at the Spine eliminated.
  • Minimal operator intervention eliminates both the presence of hands, arms, etc. in the image and operator fatigue.
  • Sharper images significantly improve OCR processing and Text Search-able images.

Page Capture

  • Digital photograph of page using a 16.6 mega pixel camera.
  • Optical path designed to view one page at a time in 110 degree cradle.
  • Camera at 90 degree angle to the page minimizes curvature effect that occurs near the spine.
  • Flat position of Page minimizes depth of field thereby maximizing sharpness.

Image Processing - Multiple output options

  • Interpolated final resolution between 300-600 DPI.
  • TIFF, JPEG and compressed PDF (2x to 100x) JPEG or TIFF or PDF outputs.
  • Image segmentation allowing color retention of pictures and graphics, while text is in black and white.
  • Centering of text to the page frame.
  • Page padding to align the image with the original page size.
  • Checksum to allow for future checking to detect page alteration.
  • Page number contact sheet to facilitate one of the QC steps to assure all images are present.
  • All processed images result in extra copy for subsequent processing or re-evaluations and negating the need for rescans!
