Winning Photo: "WWII Memorial"

This photo was shot at night using a tripod during a visit to the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. with the 8th grade class from Timothy Edwards Middle School of South Windsor, CT. The WWII Memorial honors the 16 million who served in the armed forces of the U.S., the more than 400,000 who died, and all who supported the war effort from home. The memorial is a monument to the sacrifice and commitment of the American people.

Honoring the millions of men and women who have served in the United States Air Force, this inspiring memorial is situated in Arlington, Virginia overlooking the Pentagon, the Potomac River and Washington DC. This photo is only a portion of the memorial, one of the two granite inscription walls. The design of the memorial symbolizes flight with three stainless steel spires that soar 270 feet high and represent contrails of the Air Force Thunderbirds. The memorial also has a paved Runway to Glory at the entrance, an 8 foot tall bronze Honor Guard statue, and a Glass Contemplation Wall for visitors to pay tribute to fallen airmen. The memorial was designed by James Ingo Freed, who also designed the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC.

 

Tom Smith's Biography:

Tom has been interested in photography as a hobby for almost 40 years. He began shooting film as a teenager and moved to digital photography 10 years ago. He has shot family events including weddings, countless building progress photos at work, and has traveled as the official photographer with the middle school of South Windsor, CT for over 6 years on their annual 8th grade trip to Washington D.C. Tom plans to continue shooting photographs for fun and maybe a few dollars of spending money whenever and wherever he has the opportunity.
