Winning Photo: "Lady Liberty at Sunset"

This photo was taken from a tugboat in July of 2009. The Statue of Liberty National Monument officially celebrated her 100th birthday in 1986. The people of France gave the Statue to the people of the United States over one hundred years ago in recognition of the friendship established during the American Revolution. Over the years, the Statue of Liberty’s symbolism has grown to include freedom and democracy as well as this international friendship. It was designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi.

Early morning out walking the dogs in Central Park. After three years of debate over the site and cost of the park, in 1853 the state legislature authorized the City of New York to acquire more than 700 acres of land in the center of Manhattan. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead. The park was opened in 1859, completed in 1873 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1963. It was the first landscaped public park in the United States. Today it hosts approximately twenty-five million visitors each year.
