Winning Photo: "Opening Day at Fenway Park"
Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, remains much like it did the day it opened on April 20, 1912. With its manually operated scoreboard, its geometrically peculiar shape and the stories of the legends that have played there for more than eight decades, Fenway remains a link to the legends of baseball’s past.
Accompanying Photo: "Statue of Ted Williams"
A World War II and Korean War veteran, Williams is regarded by many as the greatest hitter in baseball history. Ted Williams, who died in 2002, made hundreds of trips to local hospitals to visit sick children during his playing career. The boy in the sculpture is loosely designed as Einar “Jimmy” Gustafson, a 12-year-old cancer patient, who helped launch the Jimmy Fund. Sculptor is Franc Talarico.
